In 2007 Alex Marinov, a 3.5 level tennis player and a new college graduate working in management consulting, moved from San Francisco, CA to Miami Beach, FL. For he joined the tennis ladder at the Flamingo Tennis Center, but instead of getting a paper print out, he was pointed to a wall of magnets with players’ phone numbers.

“I remember walking out of the tennis center with a piece of paper that cost me , even though I had to write it all down myself.” says the company founder Alex Marinov. “Now, for extra fun, I had to make a bunch of phone calls, leave voice mails, inquire about people’s schedule and ask them to play with me. All that work, just to get a match.”

The Flamingo Tennis Center in Miami Beach is not the only facility using a paper based player matching system. The New York City Central Park, which has 30 outdoor courts, has the same system, only the billboard of players’ name tags is much bigger.

Alex shared the idea with his brother Martin Marinov, his UX designer friend Nikolay Tchaouchev, and a couple of software developer friends from San Francisco, and soon they had a team working on a website to help players find a tennis partner. The team was driven by a couple of challenges – building fast and globally scalable technology that would provide a real time menu of compatible tennis players and making tennis scheduling hassle free.

In August 2009 the Tennis Round go-live email announcement reached 500 tennis players who’d signed up as Beta testers. 6 months later, the site had registered members in 182 cities who had exchanged 2,200 tennis invitations and match scheduling messages.

15,000 tennis facilities in 4,200 cities are now featured with location specific details – number of courts, lights, address, private or public, name, address, phone, indoor or outdoor, satellite map and Google Maps street view. This helps players answer the usual questions – how many courts do they have, do they have lights for evening play, are they indoor, how do I get there, where do I park, what number do I call to reserve a court?

Tennis round Inc. is a website for connecting tennis players and finding tennis courts. It features a nationwide database of tennis facilities in over 4,200 U.S. cities.

Tennis players can send tennis invitations delivered by email to schedule matches, search for other players by city or ZIP code,  filter them by skill level (1.0 – 7.0) and by gender. Anyone can register for free, declare their skill level and pick a home court.

The site was launched in August 2010. Tennis Round, Inc. has 6 co-founders living in Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area
