Going on surf trips has long been one of my interests and I have gone on a lot of surf excursions to incredible places. I have gone on considerable travel over and above surf travel, but the surf vacation has always been my preferred method to observe the world. Why is this? On a surf vacation, you typically end up at some incredible place. Generally this amazing place you wind up in is someplace most only see in postcards of some wonderful isle paradise. Also, surfing a few hours in the early morning and afternoon leaves you a great deal of time for relaxation and to go out and see the sites and meet the local people.

Many beginner surfers will take their initial surf vacation with the intention of learning to surf by finding a surf camp. A simple search online will show numerous surf camps around the world. There are a lot of surf camps in destinations like Costa Rica, Mexico, and Europe that concentrate on educating people how to surf. These surf camps are often about a week and are staffed with competent surf instructors. When you leave, you will be catching waves on your own. Not a bad way of spending a getaway. Other surf camps are aimed at advanced surfers and offer guiding to surf spots only known by residents. A few of these surf camps are setup to cater to female surfers too with week long female only sessions.

A few of the most popular places to visit for a surf vacation are the Hawaiian Islands, Costa Rica, and Indonesia. I resided in Maui, Hawaii and think it is an excellent destination in the summertime months with its countless southerly facing waves in addition to Hookipa in the winter. Any of the South American places will also get excellent summer time waves and if you speak Spanish, it is easy to meet people and learn about the cultures. If you don’t speak Spanish, it is a sensible way to study the language. Take a handful of Spanish lessons in the afternoons in between surf sessions. Of course, places in Indonesia like the Telos or Mentawai islands provide the exotic surf vacation and waves that are as good as it gets for the advanced surfer. In winter months, the obvious and greatest place to check out is the North Shore of Oahu with huge, excellent surf and an excellent surf lifestyle.

I attempt to leave the country to surf at least several times a year on a surf vacation. It usually is good to see exciting destinations and encounter new nationalities. It is also wonderful to get back to my favorite surf spots away from California.

The beach seems amazing with its enormous waves that keep on coming, glorious sun and white sands; the only missing bit in the big picture is you riding the crest atop a surf board. Either you did not have a proper training in the sport of riding swells, or you were not born with the abilities of a surf god. In any case, you absolutely need help on the subject. This summer, why don’t you enroll in surf schools?

More and more people are getting hooked on exciting adventures as of present, and surfing is unquestionably one of the top picks for the water sports category. It is something which an adventure enthusiast and thrill seeker would definitely want to try out if he or she is not in to it yet. Even the not so daring men and women, who would want to do something fun in the sun this summertime as a fresh experience, would certainly enjoy learning this sport; and you can do this the proper way when you enroll in a surf school. There, you are going to encounter coaches and trainers that happen to be appropriately competent at traveling the waves; some have even earned titles in several surfing contests. Efficiency in training is obtained by grouping learners into different levels according to skill so that the suitable amount of instructions and attention on key areas of learning can be given; in that manner beginners won’t find it difficult to start, while advanced learners can learn more than what they presently know.

          ]]>

One thing more significant that approved surf schools in europe also ensure (aside from teaching highly effective principles and techniques in surfing) is the safety of their clients. They provide briefings on safety measures and techniques prior to the start of the actual surf classes, offer safe and durable devices and usually have lifeguards on standby. Most surfing schools also require the instructors themselves to be competent in basic life support or first aid in emergency situations so that the clients can be assured a safe learning experience.

And if you think that mastering something in school isn’t so much of a pleasurable summer getaway like seeing new places and being able to go in foreign lands, think again. A lot travel agencies these days offer holiday packages where you could get the chance to understand how to surf, as well. Mastering how you can surf atop the wave crests in the Canary Islands, Spain, Portugal, Ireland or France could be fantastic if you have a European holiday planned. If you want to go to Asia, you can try surf spots in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand or Maldives. Why not also consider Argentina, Brazil or Chile in South America? Depending on the particular area, you’re bound to find a surf school or surfing instructor that you can avail the services of.. And aside from mastering how you can surf, you will additionally get the chance to visitthe area, discover beautiful places besides the wonderful beaches and waves, and laze around in the tradition and history which lie awaiting you to uncover.

If you find that you simply can’t get to place each of your feet on a surf board without rolling in the brine, make your choice. Do not catch yourself falling into the ocean before the tides roll in, mainly because you will have the ability to surf like a professional, as well. Check out the best local surf destinations with the best surf schools. Or if you want to learn how to surf while on vacation abroad, update your visa, allocate your budget, surf the Internet for the most desirable deals possible, and then get in touch with that travel agency for more details.

The surf charters are the boats that have luxurious boarding along with some water sports like surfing and delicious food available at your disposal. The main aim of surf charters is to have the travelers sleep in the night in the travelling boat and allow wave surfing the next morning.

Sand. Sun. Surf. Think beach, and those are the first descriptions that pop up. Images of azure waters gently rolling to pristine shores, coconut and palm fronds waving in the sea breeze, the soft tinkling of wood-and-string instruments accompanied by the staccato of percussions… all in keeping with the picture-perfect summer holiday. So the general, typical beach-going public would agree.

But take it to a different world: one of waves swelling to as high as thirty feet overhead, of deeply tanned pecs, abs, biceps and legs running, jumping and swimming in shape and of human figures skating the surface of these gigantic waves on colorful boards in a race against crashing foam and surf. It’s the world of surfing.

Surfing traces its historic roots in the early Polynesian people of Hawaii. Memoirs written by Capt. James Cook on his visits to the Pacific are the earliest records of surfing anywhere in the world. Traditionally, the people of Hawaii lay flat on their bellies on wooden boards to skim the waves. Surfing is deeply-rooted in Hawaiian and Polynesian culture, playing a role in the construction of legends and myths. The imminent danger faced while surfing, the thought of conquering the waves, the thrill of being atop them and the discipline it takes to reach all of the above: these elements are responsible for the excitement and popularity that surfing has become.

The last statement proves true in the fact that Hollywood has capitalized on the surfing industry, making movies out of it and of the lives of surfers. “Blue Crush” features Kate Bosworth as a female surfer struggling to make her mark in this male-dominated sport. Along with two other female friends and her younger sister, Anne Marie (Bosworth) is determined to prove her worth, eyeing the Pipe Masters competition as her triumph. Amidst the stunning visuals of the Hawaiian coast, Anne Marie drives herself into shape and hones her surfing skills for the event, while making a living teaching football players the game. Though she loses the Pipe Masters contest, Anne Marie does get to demonstrate that women can surf and surf well, too in a wonderfully executed exhibition at the “Pipe,” one of the most dangerous surfing challenges present.

“Point Break” is about surfing, yes, but with a rather peculiar twist. Keanu Reeves plays Johnny Utah, a rookie FBI agent on the tail of a gang of bank robbers called “The Ex-Presidents.” The gang robs banks using masks bearing the faces of previous American presidents, and Utah’s partner, agent Angelo Pappas (Gary Busey) has a theory that they may be surfers. Utah immerses himself in a surfing culture, learning the ropes of surfing through some newfound friends headed by a guy named Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze. Bodhi turns out to be a one of the “Ex-Presidents” and he and Utah battle it out with the waves of the Los Angeles coast as their background. Utah goes from being an ex-football player who is clueless about the sea to a a competent surfer who has learned not just the art and beauty of surfing, but of good relationships as well.

A movie with a story different from what mainstream Hollywood has to offer. “Riding Giants” is just that. In documentary format and featuring real-life surfers, “Riding Giants” takes the viewer for a dive into the history of surfing, the culture that holds it alive today and the commercialized hype that has popularized it. It gives a detailed look inside the real world of surfing, where the dangers are always close by and how the fascination for those huge waves have lured and molded the icons and legends of surfing. It has been dubbed as the most informative surfing movie to date, complete with fantastic visuals.

There are more surfing movies, particularly from the sixties to the seventies. Those mentioned above have been produced in this recent century. Other popular surfing movies include “Endless Summer” and “Endless Summer 2,” “Big Wednesday,” “Billabong Odyssey,” “In God’s Hands” and the digitally animated film, “Surf’s Up” that has a penguin for its lead surfer.

Surfing does, has done, and continues to, have a grip on the world. Those who start it rarely quit. Where did this unusual sport originate? What challenges did it face to become the sport it is? Read on for a little of the history behind surfing.

First records of surfing.

Lieutenant King who went along with the more famous Captain Cook on his voyage of exploration, recorded the natives of Hawaii doing ‘he’e nalu’ (Hawaiian for surfing, meaning literally, wave sliding) in 1779 A.D. This was the first time the sport had ever been recorded in writing by a westerner. He’s recorded as saying  in Captain Cooks  journal (King finished off Cooks journal after he as killed);

“”The Men sometimes 20 or 30 go without the swell of the surf, and lay themselves flat upon an oval piece of plan about their size and breadth, they keep their legs close on top of it, and their arms are used to guide the plank, they wait at the time of the greatest swell that sets on shore, and altogether push forward with their arms to keep on its top, it sends them in with a most astonishing Velocity”

Although Lieutenant King, ‘discovered’ surfing for the western world around 330 years ago, scientists have other evidence from western Polynesia such as cave drawings and tribal stories, that suggest surfing, in one form or another, has been ongoing for around 3000 years!

Importance of surfing to the natives

Hawaiians loved to surf. Their chiefs, showed their prowess by showing off their surfing skills. Surfboards were prized items. Practically everybody on the island, knew how to surf.

While he recorded the feats of the people on Hawaii, Lieutenant King didn’t fully understand the significance of surfing to the natives. It was an integral part of their caste based system of ruling. Tribe leaders had their own private beaches to use to enjoy the waves. Lower level people were generally forbidden to use these beaches. An exception might be granted if they were seen to exhibit particular skill in the sport. If, a commoner was, allowed to use the leaders beach it was considered a great honour.

Legendary stories recorded in songs and chants, abound from both commoner and king, of lives risked and of heroic actions all while in the surf. However in the wake of Captain Cooks voyage, things were to change.

Surfing gets forced out

          ]]>

After Cooks voyage, the Hawaiian islands became the place of choice for all seafarers, captains, adventurers and the like to visit. This influx of people and cultures changed Hawaiian life quickly. For example within 50 years of Cooks visit, Liholiho, the son and successor of Kamehameha I (Chief of the island at the time), swayed by the culture of the Europeans, sat down with his mother and other high chiefesses to eat dinner as equals. Since anybody could remember, men eating with woman was strictly ‘not done’.

This single act signalled the end for the system of laws, Kapu, that the islanders had followed since the beginning of time.

With Kapu done, all the cultural and ritual ties that were associated with that and surfing went. Commoners and heiresses could mix without the commoners worrying that they might come to an un-timely death. Beaches were no longer segregated to different social classes. All traditional life had went the way of the dodo and the islanders lives, with no set structure, went into chaos. Enter the Christian missionaries.

In 1820 the missionaries arrived and began converting the islanders from Polytheism to Christianity. Within ten years the islanders were all about the strict moral codes associated with the way of the cloth, rather than their normal, laid back, island life.

Once converted the missionaries had the islanders focusing more on reading, writing, working and wearing clothes than playing or surfing. In fact surfing was actively discouraged as it was seen to be against Gods rules. The future did not look good.

The only thing going out faster than surfing was the Hawaiians themselves. The ‘foreigners’ had brought disease with them that the islanders had no immunity from. From a spritely population of around 800,000 when Cook arrived in 1779 it dwindled to around 40,000 by 1896, a loss of 95% in only 117 years.

The revival

Despite all the missionaries efforts to the contrary, surfing was never totally dismissed from the island. At the turn of the 20th century, a few die hards remained surfing at Kalehuawehe on the south shore of Oahu. There are photos of solitary surfers on the beach from this time where once in the past there had been hundreds.

The revival of surfing from the brink of extinction was brought about strangely enough from the same race of people that sought to rid the island of it in the first place.

Jack London who was a popular writer of the time visited the island and was introduced to Alexander Ford. Ford, in turn, introduced him to celebrated beach boy George Freeth and from them, London was introduced to surfing.

So impressed was London, that he wrote a book, A Royal Sport: Surfing in Waikiki. Needless to say this book did well. So well in fact that one of it’s stars George Freeth was invited to show Californians, how to surf. That too was another success for surfing.

Over the next few years these champions of the sport would breathe the necessary life, back into it. London wrote about it and Freeth showcased it to the world. Ford went about campaigning for the sport, founding the ‘Outrigger canoe club’ on Waikiki beach, which focused much on promoting the sport overseas. The fourth saviour was the final thing needed to bring it permanently to the world stage.

Duke Paoa Kahanamoku

Duke, was a native Hawaiian and a lover of surfing and all things water. Blessed with huge hands and feet, Duke took part in the 1912 and 1916 Olympics, winning Gold in the 100 meter freestyle each time. He was generally considered the fastest man in water.

In 1915 he was invited to Australia to perform in New South Wales. Pretty soon after this visit, the whole country fell in love with the sport, putting Oz on track to be a surfing Mecca.

The world knew about surfing largely from the efforts of London, Freeth and Ford. Now that such a popular figure was doing it, everybody wanted to try it.

Conclusion

Surfing was enjoyed by a few for thousands of years. Under influential pressure from Europe and the missionaries, it was nearly lost for good, but never quite vanished. Thanks largely to the efforts of four men, it would return to the world and reach unimaginable heights.

Happy Surfing.

Surfing in Portugal has been around for a while. A few pioneers in the 60′s began taking on the waves of Costa da Caparica, and soon enough it caught on with a select group of other enthusiasts. In the early days boards and wetsuits weren’t easily available, and the surfers depended on those who had boards brought back from other countries. Later on in the 70′s traveling Australian surfers left or exchanged boards and wetsuits for accommodation and transport, and slowly the surfing community was able to grow. In those days there were still few surfers, and many spots now well known where being surfed for the first time.

The first big surfing boom happened in the 80′s when surfing really took off as a sport and surf shops started opening up. With more than 600km of coast facing the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal has great surf potential , both in summer and winter. However, on the international scene it has held a low profile. In Europe, both France and Spain have held a much higher profile in terms of the international surf community, Both these countries have been a fixture of the WCT ( World Circuit Tour – the world surfing championship is held throughout the year with events in various parts of the world ). Portugal on the other hand has been kept as somewhat of a secret for those in the know.

This has changed drastically as of October 2009 , when Rip Curl decided to include Peniche as one of the places for the WCT. From one day to the other, with the help of live web cams, the world got to know of Portugal’s surf potential. The competition was a success. The quality and variety different waves surprised everyone, from organizers to the pro surfers. Portugal was put in the surfing map. The contest was so successful that it is being held again this year in Peniche.

Last year I was surfing in Nicaragua , and few people had heard about Portugal. They knew there was waves but had no specific information. This year, in Bali, the mere mention of Portugal brings about an enthusiastic response – ” yeah Portugal! Great waves I saw the web cast !!”

Despite the impact of the competition in Peniche, it wasn’t the only event pushing Portugal’s name forward in the international community. Two years ago , the first Portuguese surfer joined the rank of the world’s top 40 surfers, and began competing in the WCT. His name is Tiago Pires and has gained good acclaim from his fellow surfers on tour- What does all this mean?

Young guns

Well basically it means the surf industry has its eyes on Portuguese surfing. There are a few major brands that dominate the surf industry – Rip Curl, Billabong and Quicksilver amongst them. They are also the major sponsors for upcoming surfers. Being sponsored is a big step for any upcoming young surfer. It means someone is backing you. They pay for surf trips, boards. The kids appear in surf films, magazines and get international exposure. These kids can then go on to concentrate on their surfing careers, and, as is the dream with most, hope to end up on the WCT. With the kind of backing and sponsorship happening now because of Portugal elevated profile, we may see a few more Portuguese surfers climbing the ranks to find their place in the top 40.

Crowds

Some people fear that this exposure may also bring unwanted crowds to the Portuguese waves. In a way in might, but with more than 600 km of coast, there is bound to be enough waves for everyone! Portugal has always attracted visitors, and with surfing’s recent popularity worldwide, numerous surf schools and surf camps have opened up down the country. For those visiting from Europe, Portugal presents itself a place with sunny weather, beautiful beaches, great waves, great food and great people. Also with low cost airlines, a trip to Portugal is extremely affordable.

Save the Waves

There is a wave in Madeira island that was well known within the big wave surf community. The waves name is Jardim do Mar. The government in the island decided to construct a wave breaker using concrete structures right in front of where the wave breaks. There was a threat that the wave would never be the same again, or worst, become un-surfable. The local surf community protested, and the international organization – Save the Waves Coalition helped to make a movie documenting the whole thing. Despite the protests, the government went about and did their project. The wave still works, but has become extremely dangerous on high tides. (Meanwhile, the same government went about building a marina in a place where another wave used to work. This wave is now lost forever and the marina is out of business. )

A few years back in mainland Portugal, a project to install several jetty’s in one of Lisbon’s most popular surf beaches was met with a united outcry from the surf community. This time, enough pressure was exalted and the project was put off – this time the surf community had won. The point is that waves are allays in threat of disappearing – whether through bad coastal management, inappropriate sea side construction or pollution. Surfers aren’t heard with a credible voice by governments, and sometimes surfing isn’t seen as a credible sport. After all, millions are spent on building football stadiums, while the waves surfers surf are threatened to be destroyed. With surfing’s profile elevated in the country, and surf tourism seen as valuable commodity, then perhaps the powers that be will think about the conservation of waves instead of their destruction!

Conclusion

The increased awareness of surfing as a sport, brought about by such events as the Rip Curl pro in Peniche, will hopefully have a positive effect for everyone. From the exposure and oportunity it will give to up coming surfers, to giving credibility to the causes surfers fight for, such as wave protection and keeping the oceans clean. Surfing is to be enjoyed by everyone, and with the right spirit and attitude , we can all have fun in the water !

There are a lot of people who have a passion for surfing. However there are certain medical conditions that require people not to surf.

Eye problems: people who have a less than perfect vision, which requires them to use contact lenses at all times, they should try not to surf as they might lose their lenses. Eyesight is very important when you are out drifting out to the sea, so make sure that you carry your own glasses while surfing. People who have just undergone eye surgery should try to stay away from surfing for a long time. Even people who have lens displacement problems in their eyes should stay away from surfing at all times as it might aggravate the condition.

Arthritis: people suffering from arthritis should always stay away from surfing as it puts the kneecaps under a significant amount of stress. Surfing is all about balance as that puts a lot of pressure on the legs and cause a lot of pain. If you do not take proper precautions, you might end up in the wheel chair.

Knee surgery: when people undergo knee surgery, they need to take some time off from surfing. Surfing creates a lot of pressure on the knee joints and it might undo all the good work of the surgery. The fact remains that you should take complete rest for about two months before you can ride the waves again.

Cardiac problems: people who suffer from cardiac problems should never try to go surfing as it can lead to several complications. As you get old, the arteries get very narrow and the blood pressure rises in your body, while surfing most old people with cardiac problems cannot afford the adrenaline rush. So if you are having cardiac problems you should probably quit surfing for the good. So many people are over 35 and are in significant risk of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Many of the drowning events are preceded by cardiac arrest in the middle of the ocean so you should always go for checkups.

If you fall between the ages of 40-70 then you should take a reality check or else you might be running a significant health risk for yourself. If you do not want to drown while surfing then keep, your heart condition under control at all times stay away from surfing and stay safe. Surfing is a lifestyle sport like golfing and it is not very easy to quit at all, but you might have to quit for the sake of your family. So stay safe and healthy and don’t surf if you have any of the above-mentioned conditions
