His services as an Athletic Director were also helpful in University of Maryland and Wichita State University. Apart from that he also served as an Associate Athletic Director at the University of Pennsylvania.

One of the highlights of Lew Perkins’ career as an Athletic Director was when he worked at the University of Connecticut from 1990 to 2003. He led University of Connecticut Athletics on its immense growth in Sports, as well as, academically and financially. One of his commendable achievements is the fact that he gave the University a great number of championship appearances and six NCAA Division I National Championship titles.

However, Lew Perkins’ exceptional career did not end with his stint at the University of Connecticut.  On 2003, he had begun another milestone at the Kansas University (KU). He replaced Al Bohl, who had left KU. In keeping with his success from his previous designations, Perkins was able to bring forth growth to KU’s athletic department budget. Upon his arrival on 2003, KU’s annual budget was about $27 million. However, just recently KU’s budget has increased to more than $55 million annually.

On 2008, Perkins was nominated by Time Magazine as the Top Sports Executive in the World. Consequently, he was the only university athletic administrator to make the cut and placed 35^th on the list.

As a person vulnerable to different kinds of challenges, Lew Perkins had to face one of his most intriguing issues that threatened the health of his career. On May 2010, six members of the department had to resign or were fired because of ticket-scalping scandal that cost KU millions of dollars as a liability.
